Sunday 6 April – YCAC 7s

Rhino did a masterful job putting the squad together for this year’s YCAC 7’s. Unfortunately, 4 of the 5 Fijians were no-shows,putting more pressure on the slightly undermanned team. Invitational players Ben “Oscar” Meyer, Ross “Roscoe” Martin, and Kilive “the Magician” Naloli supplemented the local contingent of Yoshi Amano, James “Frankenstein” Rogers, Tom Jones, Ian Miller, Rikki Nakamura, and Sefo Misky. The first game against IBM saw the boys race to a 7-0 lead. Jameo trying to outdo himself (and his typical weekly nosebleed) took the ball up and took a shot to the forehead that required 10 stitches (fear not, Jameo, now resembling an Iraqi casualty, played in the rest of YCAC’s games). In the second half with the YCAC trailing 14-12, Yoshi “white line fever” Amano had a tremendous chance from 5m out, but came away empty handed. The boys couldn’t re-group and IBM put us away 28-12. Tom Jones came on for the last 60 seconds and was seriously concussed. More serious was us having to listen to the same 5 questions for two hours until Jackie could pick him up. (note: IBM went onto lose to the eventual champions, Sanix, 19-24). With Jameo stitched up and the rest of the boys determined to make a day out of it, the YCAC throttled Tamariba 36-10. Ben, Roscoe and Kilive led the way, however everybody contributed. Moving into the semis for the Consolation Final, YCAC faced Mitsubishi Sagamirahara. Depite being a company team, the Mitsubishi boys were clearly out-classed by the YCAC and were unceremoniously thumped 33-17. Sefo and Rikki, each scoring, played their best games of the day. Facing off against SECOM in the consolation final, the boys drew first blood and looked like they would cruise to an easy win, however a long day caught up with our 8 remaining players and SECOM chipped away and eventually won 31-19. Depite the loss, it was a great day of rugby. Kilive was a well deserved Player of the Tournament, winning some artwork and a snog later that night. Thanks to the players and the YCAC supporters that enjoyed a great display of SARS-free 7’s.
