Sunday 2 December 2001

It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win. We beat Acorn 17-13 on Sunday, playing just one game because of a shortage of players at both clubs.
We lost the ball in the tackle too often and tended to throw it away when we should have held on. A typically Japanese (ie offside/over the top) performance by Acorn (and the ref) made it tough in the loose, but we ran well with the ball and dominated in the tight (as we should with 4 props & 3 locks in the pack!). In the end we did just enough, and Nick Bartelot saved 2 certain tries with superb tackles, to get the W.
Mike Powell played his last game for YCAC after a career starting in 1984 and featuring interport wins 17 years apart. We wish him & the family well in their new posting in Sydney (tough life!).
John Hammond also returned to the side after an Aussie sojourn and will play his last couple of games in the coming weeks. A mention also to Tom Summersall – a guest from the Cru – who played a good game at scrum half.
Try scorers were Tom, Rich Corner & Nick, who also got 1 conversion.
Nick was man of the match for his score, brilliant defense, good running, and for looking so silly in the headgear.
