Sunday 12 January

Ellis have what is probably the only opposition front row that makes Scottie look young, but what they lacked in fleetness of foot they more than made up for in well-drilled set-pieces. Consequently, for the first time this season, the YCAC Second Team backs had to make do with crumbs of possession. But the ever hungry Kingdom was soon scoffing to his heart’s content and within 15 minutes had scored two unanswered tries from breaks from his own half. Unfortunately, Kingdom has been watching a bit too much NFL and started celebrating his tries before even crossing the 22. He was withdrawn for his own protection at half time.
Jason Dunn kept up his prolific try-scoring streak and Kevin Gibson ran in a try from half way. His wife was so excited that she spontaneously went into labour and gave birth to their first child the following day. The poor bonny lad has had the misfortune to be named “Fraser”, but at least he can look forward to a mis-spent youth. The final score was 29-25, after Oz kicked 2 conversions. The Man of the Match Award went to Renaud whose performance had everything: speed, guile, skill, aggression, a try, a punch, a kick, a yellow card and a Gallic tantrum. A truly outstanding display.

The Firsts were taken by surprise by a very strong Sanyo team who, it seems, rank amongst the top handful of club sides in Japan. Without playing badly, we were beaten in most phases of the game. Their support play and speed to the breakdown were big factors and despite generally good tackling by our back line, they manged to find a way round or through fairly regularly. Final score was 40-5. YCAC’s try was the result of an excellent forwards’ drive, but the man who touched down at the bottom of the maul is yet to stake his claim.
Go Ito played a particulary good game both carrying the ball and defending – whether one-on-one or getting stuck in to rucks & mauls. Charlie Baynes-Reid was picked as man of the match for a non-stop combative effort in the forwards.
