Sunday 10 March 2002

Despite the gusting winds, it was a beautiful day for rugby. The Gents, with yet another strong showing, whipped Ellis 2XV 87-7. Both the forwards and backs dominated the opposition. Garlo, emerged from his winter hibernation, scoring three tries (and kicking 11 conversions) from the half back spot. Luke Ramo and Rob Jee had several impressive try scoring runs (some from midfield) and notched 2 and 3 tries respectively. Other scorers on the day included Tosser Totton, Richard Hoskins, Jeff “Axl” Scott, Kuri, and Mark Tudor. All around a great performance by the Gents.
The Firsts were a bit lackadaisical against an Ellis 1XV side that included 6 players that played against the Gents. Lack of support (coupled with Ellis frequently playing offside) led to our squandering a lot of possession.
James Jason China Lovegrove played a powerful game, at inside center in the first half and at 8-man in the second half, scoring 2 tries. Benn Sheperd wove his way through the opposition on 2 magnificent try scoring runs (while missing 2 more sure tries with dropped balls). Terry Brink made his usual strong contribution anchoring the scrum and doing the dirty work in the loose. Garlo, playing his second game of the afternoon, scored another try and kicked 6 more conversions (54 points on the day!!). Hannes and Malcolm were an effective tandem at half back and fly half, while James “Peacock” Rogers emerged from the game without his customary bloody nose. Other try scorers were Dave Ernie Nichol, Tom Jones and Arthur GDC. Ellis, a team long in the tooth, boasting players older than Marvin Sizemore and Erich (skipper for the day), never gave up. Strong tackling by Fraser and thebackline in the latter part of the second half denied Ellis any tries and we finished the match 52-0.
