Sunday 1 December

The Gents faced off against Zenkai Beers in the first match of the day. Playing in a downpour, Kev Gibson and Bollocks led the Gents to a 29-17 victory. On the day, Kev scored two tries and passed away a third to Kuri (to avoid the hat-trick). The Ref awarded the Gents a penalty try after three consecutive “naughty” on a 5m scrum. Neil “Teflon” Smith scored the try of the day, sealing a Gents victory. Teflon was correspondingly the Man of the Match (however the beer didn’t go down very smoothly). At the aftermatch party, the Beers treated the crowd to their version of the haka, complete with well practiced hip thrusts (from my perspective, it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye).

The first XV match against Keio University commemorates the first rugby match played in Japan over 100 years ago. The boys in blue were very fired up from the opening kick off and after 7 brilliant phases, touched down for the first try. Despite their fast paced game plan and tenacious tackling, it was all downhill for Keio, as they were clearly overmatched. Arthur “une minute s’il vous plait” Gautier-de-Charnace, Go “get ’em” Kawai and Tom “Delilah” Jones all scored off well executed lineouts (Go’s from more than 20m out). Jimmy “the Peacock” Rogers touched down a Terry Brink led pushover try. The backline attacked (and defended) very well on the day. Quick ball from Masa and Garlo (#9 and #10) led to many opportunities. Nick Humphries, playing in his YCAC debut, scored a lovely try. The back three of Chris Goddard, Rich Freeman (2 tries, 3 conv), Rikki Nakamura (2 tries, 2 conv), and replacement Go Ito (1 try) were too fast for Keio (or too cunning in Rich’s case) and had several blinding runs.
Yoshi Amano (1 try), Terry Brink, James Rogers and Robby Grant dominated the loose play. When we kept our heads and possession of the ball, there was very little that Keio could do. The final score: YCAC 1st XV 65 Keio University 3rd XV 15
