Saturday 6 April 2002

This was the day when Interport, the Cru and other trivial matters were put to one side and battle lines were drawn for the decisive rugby event of the year – the YC&AC Panty Shield, when the might of the 6 nations’ finest took on the rest of the world.
We welcomed several new faces for the game – Derek & Matthew for RoW and Oliver in the centre for 6N, and said bonjour to Cedric & Olivier who took the total French representation for les bleus to 5. It seemed there was a new, blonde-haired back-rower on the 6N side as well, but the strong smell of stale booze following him round confirmed that it was just Thomo after all.
The game itself was as fierce as any this season (if only we’d been that committed against the Cru last week!) with the RoW pack working extremely well as a unit – they scored 2 tries driving over from the lineout and secured a ton of loose ball. Tim White was outstanding in attack, and Zoo was the same in defence – he put in two massive try-saving tackles in his farewell game at the club.
Olivier scored a try for 6N – elegantly converted by Richard Hoskin – but that was to be the Europeans’ only impact on the scoreboard and the RoW ran out winners 22-7. I have no idea who scored as they were buried under a pile of team-mates each time, but Tom Jones did sneak one conversion over after 3 comical failures by the front row.
All in all it was a match played in a great spirit – thanks & congratulations to all involved and to the Vicar for reffing, and long may the tradition continue.
