Saturday 5 Oct – YCAC v Navy Seahawks

It’s good to have the first game of the season under our belts. The Seahawks were no less hard hitting than the guards who turned Arthur GDC away at the front gate for having an expired Gaijin card.
The game featured the YCAC debuts of several new players- Rob Evans, Masa Nozaki, Dai Godo, Ben Ruddy, Chris Goddard Jason Dunn and Walter de Oude (not to mention the return of Garlo, who was MIA the majority of last season).
We got off to a strong start as the forward pack dominated play for the first 15 mins. Paddy Maloney won some tremendous lineout ball at first jumper.
Two forward tries by James “Elephant Man” Rogers and Dai “Don’t call me Francis” Godo, followed by two Rob Evans conversions, quickly put the score at 14-0. Afterwards our play was spotty, alternating between 15 man rugby and the “I’ll go it alone” approach. Chris Goddard scored a beautiful diving try in the corner before the end of the half (also converted by Rob Evans).

We substituted freely throughout the game, giving everybody an opportunity to play approx. 60 mins. A variety of combinations revealed the makings of a promising backline. The Seahawks improved as the game progressed. What they lacked in experience they made up for in tenacity and fierce tackling. James “Elephant Man” Roger and Terry Brink both had to visit to base hospital for stitches (17 and 14 respectively). Second half tries were scored by Terry Brink and Jason Dunn (no more conversions as Rob’s leg was tired). Masa Nozaki, after a 2 year hiatus from rugby, was the “Man of the Match” at scrum half. He was the smallest, yet most vocal player on the pitch, effectively digging out and distributing the ball.
Plenty to build on, but after a hard hitting game, a satisfying win all the same. It was good to see many of our old friends (and teammates), Sandy, Chuck, Luke, and Oz.

Final YCAC 31-0 Seahawks
