Dec – YCAC Gents XV 42, Asahi Shinbun 5 & YCAC First XV 31, Nihon Unisys 29

Tries: D.Robertson (2), J. Robertson (1), I.Miller (1), Jimmy (1). Conversions: B.Duncan (3)

YCAC came away with two wins from two on a freezing Yamate afternoon. The Gents were too strong for the Asahi newspaper boys – JD scored 3 tries, two of which were donated by Rhino, who also bagged a pair himself. Other scorers were Yuji, Gav Moolman & Matthieu Rosenberg. Fraser showed that his mind is already on his beach holiday with a total of 1 conversion from 8 attempts.
The Firsts were gracious hosts and let Nihon Unisys enjoy the lead for 59 minutes of the game. It was 24-29 as the Firsts packed down for the final scrum about 40 metres out from the opposition line on the left. the ball was released from the scrum to Ben Duncan at 10 who juggled the it masterfully as he ran across the face of the opposition defensive line and as the YCAC centers dummy ran on his inside. The juggling was followed by a well timed pass along the ground from the YCAC outside backs, which was scooped up by Ben Duncan doubling around. The juggling and ground passes threw the opposition defence into total confusion, which let Ben slide through some holes out wide and make some good yardage. He offloaded to Ian Miller (touching the ball for the second time in the game) who tip toed down the right hand side touch line as a swarm of Unisys defenders tried desperately to cover tackle him…they were unsuccesful and Ian crossed the line and scooted along inside the dead ball line to touch down about 10 metres right of the posts. 29-29. Ben, who was instrumental in the try to tie the match, had the task of converting to win. No dodgy conversion call by the touch judges was required as Ben took his conversion tally for the day to 3/5 with a solid kick. It was a great escape. Player of the day was one of Tim Wood’s mates, Jimmy, after a great try under the posts and some solid tackling.
