4 Dec – YCAC Gents XV 27, Itochu 19 & YCAC First XV 38, Keio Uni 34

Gents tries: Ben Edelshain (2), Adam Gravseth, Masa Ishida. Pen: Fraser Jamieson, Cons: Fraser (2)

A last minute try was not enough for Keio to steal away a deserved victory for the YCAC firsts. This was despite a number of injuries keeping players off the pitch and a mysterious illness that struck down our Aussie contingent on Saturday morning. Their were a number of telling blows in the game and the first came in the first few minutes after Keio had looked likely to opening the scoring. Rikki dashed their hopes of the initial points with an intercept and a 60m run for the tryline. Ben duly converted (how he did that with his eyes closed after a big night out is a mystery) marking a stand-out moment in the game. The young and fit Keio team came back extremely well from that however and racked up 17 points from three consecutive tries before Marcus once again this season collected the ball from a forwards drive close to the Keio line and walked in for a try to add to his season’s tally. Ben had woken up by now as one of the Keio boys had upset his hair-do and slotted the conversion to take the scores to 17-14 into half time.
YCAC started the second half with a huge hit by Marcus off the kick-off chase that sent the ball straight back into YCAC hands. We were able to get the ball wide quickly from that and Bjorn, who had been quietly practicing ground strokes most of the first half, beat a number of tackles to score in the bottom right hand corner of the field. That try opened the Keio gates as they weren’t able to compete with our retention of ball and the big boys making the hard yards. First it was Brookey who snaffled one from another strong forward drive following a penalty kick drilled into the corner by Ben. Ben made up for his missed conversions of the last two tries by dotting down under the posts a few minutes after big Brookie’s try, after some strong YCAC scrummaging and driving. That was converted too. With Brookey and Marcus scoring Dan Clark was confident that this would be the day that he would score his first try in 15 years of rugby but it was Johan who collected off yet another forwards drive to take the score to 38-17 after another Patu conversion. We took the pressure off in the last minutes of the game and allowed Keio to score three tries but our efforts earlier in the half were enough to take the win.
Tries Rikki Nakamura, Marcus Waudby, James Robertson, Mike Brooke, Ben Patu, Johan Slabbert. Cons: Ben (4)
