19 Dec – YCAC Gents XV 27, Acorn 29 & YCAC First XV 39, Acorn 19

Tries: Ben Edelshein, Nao, James Robertson (2), James Rogers, Niall Jefferson, Hayden Scown. Cons: Niall Jefferson, Matt Dimond. MOTM Niall Jefferson

The Gents were always on the back foot against Acorn afer letting in two soft tries in the first 5 minutes, but fought back hard. The forwards dominated, the backs tackled hard, and by half time the deficit had been narrowed. Two early tries in the second half (with Wild Man Parris recording his second of the day with a plunge over from a 5 yard scrum) reduced the deficit to 7 points with only minutes to play. Acorn gave away a succesion of penalties only yards from their line and YCAC eventually found room on the right. Sushi let the ball slip through his fingers like a slippery Golden Snitch with the line beckoning, but he knocked it back, a team-mate swooped, and we were only 2 points behind. Lindsay lined up the conversion on the right touchline. He swung the boot and the ball took to the air . . . . like a pheasant with half a pound of buckshot in its arse. It was a valiant effort, but fell short, and the final score was 27-29.
Tries: Nathan Parris (2), Ben Edelshein, Masa Ishida, Kame Kuri. Cons: Nao, Kuri. MOTM Lindsay Arand

The first team welcomed several new faces from the Gents, all of whom stepped up & made a good contribution. We had help from 2 of Kuri’s university buddies, Hayden Scown brought his considerable bulk in our centres and Ian Miller made a return.
Niall was heavily involved throughout the game playing Number 10 and earnt the man of the match for his efforts there. Jameo also deserves a mention for coming back from the brink of death on Sunday morning after that dodgy drumstick and then scoring a great try by striding down the sideline like a winger (actually the highlight of that play was Jimmy Robertson feeling the Xmas spirit and for once passing it). Jameo also had a hand in Ian Miller’s superb defensive moment when he held up and Acorn player over the line when it looked like a sure try.
