14 Dec – YCAC Gents XV 26, Acorn 45 & YCAC First XV 27, Acorn 27

Against Acorn the Gents gave away more Christmas presents than Santa Erich at Fraser & Conny’s Christmas party. Acorn helped themselves, unlike Sasha Jamieson (who is canny enough to have learnt early not to accept presents from strange, old men). Thank God that the average Japanese girl in her twenties has still not learnt that lesson.
And yet, all started so well for the Gents. Scottie Sizemore was plucking kick-offs out of the air as if he had sticky fingers (ooops, back to Santa Erich again!). Luke Ramoe opened the scoring, cutting through the Acorn defence like US machine-gun fire through a crowd of Iraqi civilians. Blake Harrop and Jonathan Greening both scored fine tries and the game looked evenly balanced at 19-19 at half-time. But then it all fell apart. When Doddy is the first OAP to the break-down, you know you are in trouble. The man first played Acorn 30 years ago and the rumours are that he made his YCAC debut at the age of 40. And when the Gents did score, Acorn kicked off and scored a try within 5 seconds of the re-start without any YCAC player touching man or ball until the Acorn player had crossed the try line. Happy Christmas Acorn!
Lindsey Arrand capped a determined personal display with a fine try and towards the end of the match YCAC had reasserted dominance in scrum and line-out, but it was all too late. Acorn ran off with the turkey and all the Gents got was a stuffing.

Christmas came early for Acorn in the first team fixture. In this case, the ref played Santa for Acorn and was more of a Grinch for the YCAC. A match that at times looked like a YCAC walk over, ended in a 27-27 tie.
We consistently played to their level and gave them multiple kicks at the can after yielding penalty after penalty. To their credit, they did tap and go (unlike the kick happy opponent the previous week) and shoddy tackling in our end resulted in a couple of Acorn tries. James Rogers scored twice (push over try, and try from base of a scrum). Tom “Long time, no see” Jones and James Robertson scored tries as well. The Grinchy Ref’s heart grew one size as he awarded us a penalty try from a 5m scrum. Fraser, a bit wobbly from the session the day before, kicked one of 5 conversions. For those looking for Christmas gift ideas for Fraser, a Playstation with a rugby kicking game would be good.
The closing minutes were quiet exciting- Acorn scored a try to tie the score at 22,James Robertson answered back with a great try for the YCAC to regain the lead at 27-22. With little time left, Acorn scored in the corner to knot the score.
